What is PRF, and how does it work?
PRF (platelet-rich plasma therapy) is a widely used new and exciting method in implant dentistry. What are the benefits of platelet-rich fibrin?
In simpler terms, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a fibrin clot with many growth factors with a boundless potential for bone and soft tissue regeneration, without inflammatory reactions and may be used alone or in combination with bone grafts, promoting hemostasis, bone growth, and maturation. This procedure efficiently aids implant rehabilitation, wound healing, and bone regeneration. When mixed with bone graft, it may act as a “biological connector” that attract stem cell and favors the migration of osteoprogenitor cells to the center of the graft. PRF reduces post-surgery swelling and pain and drastically speeds up the recovery process for implant surgery. Growth factors are released over the next 14 days to aid faster and more ideal healing.
How is platelet-rich plasma extracted?
Platelet-rich fibrin is a blood concentrate made from the patient’s blood. It can be created within the Alpha Plus Dental Center in as little as 15 minutes. Preparation is a relatively simple technique. The required quantity of blood is drawn quickly into test tubes without an anticoagulant and centrifuged immediately. Blood can be centrifuged using a tabletop centrifuge for at least 10 minutes at 3000 revolutions per minute. The resultant product consists of the following three layers: the topmost layer consists of platelet-poor plasma, PRF clot in the middle, and red blood cells at the bottom. PRF is available as a fibrin clot. PRF clot can be removed from the test tube using a sterile tweezer-like instrument. After lifting, the red blood cell layer attached to the platelet-rich fibrin clot can be carefully removed using a sterilized scissor.

The pictures below show one of the real implant bridge cases at Alpha Dental Center in Brookline, MA. Two implant bridges were delivered for this case, with missing posterior teeth on both sides. The patient now has an entire arch of teeth: right side 3-unit posterior bridge and left side 3-unit posterior bridge. After surgical planning, he got platelet-rich fibrin (PRF plasma).
