Gum Disease Awareness Month
Gum disease and tooth decay are widespread dental problems that affect millions of people worldwide. Gum disease affects far more than just gums. It also significantly increases your risk of tooth loss, heart disease, stroke, bone destruction, and diabetes. It is well-known that patients with gum disease were three times as likely to have a stroke involving blood vessels in the back of the brain, which controls vision, coordination, and other vital bodily functions. Periodontal (gum) diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, are serious infections that, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss.
Brushing twice a day and flossing daily are the best ways for prevention, as well as regular check-ups. Early-stage gum disease, or gingivitis, is easily detected by your dental hygienist and is highly treatable, thus preventing advanced gum disease. Preventative care at home, combined with twice a year visit to our office, will keep your teeth and gums healthy and enable us to catch any problems and diseases early. Oral health is essential to general health and well-being.
Here are some tips to prevent gum disease:
- Brush your teeth every morning and night
- Blush your gums. It may feel weird at first, but it removes bacteria and improves blood circulation
- Floss before you brush your teeth. It’s an extra step that does wonders for your gums, your teeth, and your breath
- See a dentist every six months for a cleaning and a professional inspection of your gums
