PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Therapy
Let’s talk about the benefits of PRP in modern dentistry. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is concentrated blood plasma that is used as a treatment for many dental issues. Our blood consists of many cells referred to as plasma and millions of platelets rich in growth factors with the ability to regenerate and repair tissue. The ability of platelets to significantly accelerate the healing of damaged tissues is applied not only in aesthetic medicine. How Does It Work?
PRP therapy allows patients to take advantage of the body’s natural healing, but at a greatly accelerated rate. During the healing process, it sends platelets to the site of trauma to initiate healing. In Dentistry we call it PRF, platelet-rich fibrin. The patient’s own blood is drawn and spun at a specific speed, resulting in a concentration of plasma and other cells that is allowed to clot and forms a large fibrin clot. When this heavily concentrated clot is isolated, it contains three to five times the number of growth factors found in normal blood!
Methods of Preparation of Platelet-Rich Fibrin
- Collect blood from the patient’s arm
- Separate the platelets in a centrifuge (it spins and separates the platelets and white blood cells from the rest of the blood components (red blood cells)
- Extract platelet-rich fibrin
- Squeeze the fibrin to make a membrane or place it into a fresh extraction site
